Sensory lighting installation and electrical maintenance and upgrades.
Site:
The ICU (Intensive Care Unit) is designed for critical patients who need intensive treatment and continuous observation. The HDU (High Dependency Unit) is a care room for patients who require high-dependency nursing. We were requested to install multiple sensory lights to improve the patient experience.
While the Meel Group engineers had access to the units, we decided to perform electrical maintenance and upgrades.
Contract Arrangements:
Meel Group has a long working relationship with Stockport NHS Foundation Trust.
Project Scope:
Due to the high use and the condition of patients in the areas, only small windows of opportunity existed to carry out the work.
While we had access to the department to install the sensory panels, we decided that any other departmental maintenance and upgrade work should be carried out.
We worked closely with the Trust and the Department manager to achieve this.
Scope of Works:
We combined work from multiple schemes into one site attendance to minimize disruption to the staff and patients.
- Fitting 6 banks of sensory LED panels (various panels in each)
- Ambient Bedhead lighting – 1 per bed, 8 in total
- Wireless access points
- Self-reporting wireless networked emergency lighting
- IP65 LED Lighting Upgrades in 4-bed ward shower rooms
- Cleaning – Trust Domestic cleaning team- in line with infection prevention requirements
Sensory Light Details:
The LED Sensory lighting provided an environmental improvement to the department.
- 12000 LUMENS
- 40w POWER per panel
Each Set of 6 LED panel lights creates an immersive sensory environment with flicker-free LED units replicating natural light.
The Results:
The sensory lighting installation has been very well received by the nursing staff and the Trust. Our team’s flexibility in working around the availability of access and dealing with the project quickly was much appreciated.
The self-reporting emergency lighting installation allows the Trust maintenance team to closely monitor the condition of the emergency lighting to ensure compliance and patient safety. The Wireless access points allow both patients and staff to have reliable connection to the internet
The project was completed on schedule and budget.
Project feedback:
It has been a pleasure working with the Meel Group team.
The project encompassed working in a complex environment with a dynamic patient cohort that changed daily, requiring planning both in advance and in response to risk assessment on the day.Meel Group’s Project Managers worked closely with the unit’s matron and senior staff to best facilitate the use of the time available in each location within the unit. Each may have been free for a very limited time.
Good communication was at the centre of this, and I found the staff from Meel Group to be accommodating and responsive on a daily basis.
The improvement to the working environment on the Critical Care Unit has been measurable, with improved lighting for both the patients, visitors and staff.
The work was carried out very smoothly with minimal disruption. I would be very happy to work with them again.
