School Energy and Efficiency Refurbishment
Site
Bradshaw Hall Primary School is a two-form entry school in Cheadle Hulme in the Borough of Stockport. The project duration was to be from April to October 2022.
Project Scope:
The school wished to have an energy-efficient building with greater comfort levels for staff and pupils. In addition, the existing M&E installation required an update in order to comply with current regulations.
The school also desired to reduce their running costs by installing energy-efficient LED lighting and solar thermal panels for hot water heating. They also required the upgrading and relocating of electrical outlets and a new intruder alarm system.
Contract Arrangements:
Meel Group Projects division was the principal contractor on this scheme.
We were awarded the contract by Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council through tender, based on price, a strong social value score, plus a proven track record of delivering school refurbishment to a high standard.
Scope of Works:
Electrics
Electrical outlets were replaced and relocated to more convenient positions. The installation was made using modern dado trunking.
Data cabling was installed throughout the school, and a new intruder alarm system was set up.
To ensure an optimum working environment for staff and pupils and a reduction in energy used, LED lighting was installed throughout the school with the aid of a new dropped ceiling.
Heating:
Upgrades to the school’s primary heating system included defining new heating zones.
The main boiler plant required new control valves, pipework, radiators, casings and valves. The existing and new pipework was insulated and boxed in to reduce heat loss.
The primary hot water system was upgraded by installing and integrating a new solar-thermal plant into the existing BMS controls. The ‘Modular’ area heating system was also given a new boiler plant, new pipework and BMS controls. In addition, a new hot water cylinder and immersion heater were part of this update.

Health & Safety
We take Health and Safety seriously on all projects. As the Principle Contractor, we also manage the health and safety practices of the subcontractors and ensure they work in a safe environment and adhere to all the codes and best practices.
Asbestos was present in some regions of the building, which required correct identification; all engineers have asbestos awareness training and take steps accordingly.
The project also involved working at height with the installation of roof-mounted solar thermal panels.
The Results:
The project was achieved on budget. Both Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council and the school were happy with the completed project.
