Budget: £342,000

Services Used

Combined M&E Refurbishment of the Pathology Laboratory’s Plant Room.

Site:

The Pathology Lab’s plant room is within Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport.

Project Scope:

The Pathology Lab’s boiler room, including its controls, had reached the end of its working life and required total replacement with a modern and efficient plant room. The existing pipework was to be maintained.

The new, efficient plant equipment and controls were specified to the latest industry standards and guidelines, ensuring a reduction in the hospital’s carbon footprint.

The project scope involved supplying and installing new efficient gas-fired boilers, gas-fired efficient water heaters, pumps, and pressurisation units, including a new control system.

Contract Arrangements:

We have a long history of working with Stockport NHS Trust and this project was awarded to us based on price and reputation.

Project Challenges:

Stepping Hill is a very busy working hospital, and the heating and hot water supplies had to be maintained during the refurbishment project. Therefore, we installed a temporary plant supply outside the building during the work to avoid significant downtime.

Health & Safety:

Discovery of asbestos within the existing plant room did pose an issue. This was mitigated by employing a certified asbestos-licensed contractor to make sure it was safely encapsulated.

The plant room building required a new door and louvre window.

The existing door and separate louvre had also come to the end of their practical lives, so we replaced them.

It required stonework to adjust the apertures to a modern standard size.

Plant Room Design

The plant room building was small in size, we designed the new equipment and controls to be installed within the available space.

The NHS Trust engaged Steven Hunt Associates to produce the plant specification and schematics.

  • BMS Controls
  • Hamworthy Dorchester Water Heaters
  • Grundfos Pump Sets
  • Microfill Pressurization Unit
  • Spirotech Air & Dirt Separator
  • Low Voltage Cabling
Results:

We completed the project to a very high standard, with very little downtime in supply to the affected areas of the hospital.  The project was achieved on schedule and on budget. The Pathology Lab now has a modern and efficient energy supply of 600KW heating and 160KW hot water.

Feedback:

“We carried out a final inspection of the boiler room yesterday and may I congratulate you on the quality of the job and the extremely proactive approach throughout the project.

It’s been a pleasure to work with you and it would be good to have you on another scheme.”
