Whiteways Primary School is part of the Cascade Multi Academy Trust, in the north east of Sheffield. Meel Group were the selected electrical contractors to replace the schools old electrical lighting with a new energy efficient system.
Meel Group electrical installation team have many decades of experience in the installation of lighting within schools.
Project Scope:
The school’s current lighting system was outdated and required replacement with modern energy-efficient LED fixtures. To increase the flexibility and efficiency of the overall system, a lighting control system was integrated into the design.
Dimming controls enabled teaching staff to adjust the lighting to suit the needs of different teaching activities.
Further efficiencies were achieved by the addition of absence/presence detectors, which reduced the need for manual control and produced further reductions in the school’s energy consumption.
Additional works
As part of the installation, we replaced ceiling tiles that had historical damage to improve the appearance of the school. Additionally, we undertook minor decoration works to improve the overall look of the rooms and corridors before the term resumed.
Project Challenges
The specified lighting fittings had a long manufacturing lead time, however we collaborated closely with the supplier, which helped expedite delivery, and complete all work during the half-term school holiday..

Health and Safety
At the Meel Group we take Health & Safety very seriously and all RAMs were in place. Our teams worked at heights during the lighting installation, which was managed safely using the correct access equipment. No accidents or near misses occurred.
Results:
The project was completed on time and within the school holiday period, avoiding disruption to staff and students. We replaced all the existing lighting, and the installation met the goals of improving lighting quality and reducing the school’s energy use.
Project Completion:
Whiteways Primary School’s staff and pupils now benefit from improved lighting quality in corridors and classrooms. The building is also much more energy efficient,
