Conversion of redundant retail outlet into state-of-the-art NHS health hub within a shopping centre in Hyde.
Site:
The site was previously a B&M Bargains outlet within the medium-sized indoor shopping centre Clarendon Shopping Mall, Hyde, Cheshire.
Project Overview:
The project consisted of refurbishing and converting a redundant retail store into a healthcare facility. The plans included eleven treatment rooms, a kitchen, a staff room and a reception/waiting area.
Contract Arrangements:
We were awarded the project based on price and reputation.
Scope of Works: Domestic Services
Meel Group installed domestic services throughout the building, including W/Cs and hot and cold feeds to each basin.
The correct water temperature for each hot tap was enabled by the installation of a thermal balancing valve at the end of each run.
We also installed a 300L hot water cylinder at the rear of the property in a repurposed W/C.
Scope of Works: Sanitaryware
All sanitaryware installed was high-quality medical grade specification. As well as installing eleven basins, one in each treatment room, we also installed two Doc M accessible W/C washrooms and two standard W/Cs.
Scope of Works: Air Conditioning
We supplied and installed Air conditioning in all treatment and communal rooms. The high-quality AC units we specified carry a ten-year warranty (dependent on annual servicing and maintenance).
Scope of Works: Ventilation
For ventilation purposes, the healthcare facility was divided into three zones.
- Communal areas.
- Right-side treatment rooms.
- Left-side treatment rooms.
We installed a Lossnay unit in each zone, allowing the client to control each zone’s requirements. The ventilation system reduced cross-zone contamination by using a mix of extracted and fresh air, allowing clean air flow into each area.
Project Challenges
We overcame the challenges of finding a viable route for the intake and exhaust of the ventilation due to the large number of services in this part of the building.
We worked as a team and surveyed the area to create a plan and route that would work; this involved working with the various trades on-site to achieve this successfully.

Health & Safety:
At Meel Group, Health and Safety are paramount. All RAMs were in place, and we had no incidents during the project.
One aspect of H&S planning was the safe transportation of the heavy AC plant upstairs to its installation location; this was carried out safely using a stair lifter.
Results:
“The results of the installations are precisely what we wanted, and the client is pleased with the works we have provided. “
